CELEBRATING MAKE IT HOME INC.
OUR STORY
Make it Home Safely Inc. was established in 2015 to raise the awareness of the long term impact of traumatic head injury and to empower young people to create, communicate and implement safe driving practices.
The project was developed by Nyree Mannion whose sister survived a traffic crash though never made a meaningful recovery and has resided in care for the past 26 years.
It is estimated each year more than 11,000 Queenslanders are expected to acquire a brain injury, of them 4,000 develop a serious disability. Motor vehicle accidents will be responsible for 70% of traumatic brain injury. Of this number 70% will involve young people aged between 16-24 years, two thirds of them will be male.
The Make it Home project was first launched in schools to educate young people of the importance of driving safely. The following year the Make it Home 100 program was launched to support young learner drivers without access to a supervisor or registered vehicle, to complete their logbook hours.

Make it Home Safely Inc. are supporting disadvantaged young people without access to a supervisor or registered vehicle to complete their logbook hours.
Education Qld has identified a barrier to year 11 & 12 students transitioning to employment if not having a drivers licence which is more prevalent in low socio economic families. According to the Queensland Government, as of June 2018 Wynnum’s population was 14,145 persons. 9% of the overall population of Wynnum are socio economically disadvantaged meaning they are low income earners, have high unemployment rates or are in dwellings without a motor vehicle.
Scan to Plan
In 2018/19 Make it Home Safely Inc announced Scan to Plan – a social media campaign to remind young people and the community to make better choices when driving on our roads.
These videos were supported by the Wynnum Manly Leagues Club Community Grant program, calebloeken, and mentors and learner drivers from the Make it Home 100 program.
The road rules mentioned in our Scan to Plan videos have been checked by an independent driving instructor to ensure they are accurate to the date of filming. These videos are created for a Queensland audience, so road rules in your state or country may differ. Please check your government’s transport department or your local law enforcement agency for road rules that are relevant to you.
WHAT’S NEXT?
On the 20th October, 2020 Make it Home Safely Inc board members made the hard decision to close the association. We would like to thank our volunteers, community stakeholders and young people who have helped us to raise the awareness of the long term impact of traumatic head injury and empower young people to create, communicate and implement safe driving practices.
We also want to thank our mentors who provided 2,049 hours of supervised driving over 62,568 kms supporting disadvantaged young people to obtain their provisional licence. Let’s continue to make better choices to keep our friends and family safe on our roads.
While Make it Home has come to an end our founder, Nyree Mannion, will continue to be a voice in the local community promoting safe driving behaviour.
